I have just installed Windows 1803 multiple times after a system crash and even though I paused updates before connecting to the network, Windows is downloading and installing drivers and software (NVidia) in addition to downloading single files every 5-10 minutes. PC Updating is also disabled. The files are not part of a Windows Update and include Windows Speech Model executable's, Antimalware Service executable's and Windows Setting .EXE from different/multiple CDN's that appear legitimate, but are possibly malicious. They include xxx.xxx.data.microsoft.com.akadns.net, xxx.v0cdn.net, etc.

I installed Glasswire and the files are verified with VirusTotal as clean. The updates continue then force a reboot. The system then appears to virtualize after a reboot and run slowly. Hardware checks show the downgrading of the CPU to a lesser family (family 6) and the removal of cores - similar to bitcoin miners.

The drives were wiped with DBAN prior to a fresh install. The possibility of an infection appears to be stored within the HDD's HPA / DCO although cleaning these area's on the drive manually has not cured the problem. At this point, it is impossible to determine the propagation technique.

All the downloaded files are digitally signed and verified by Microsoft and not one AV program detects or intercepts them.

Any advice you can offer is much appreciated.
