I've been cutting down on my narcotic prescribing, along with most of my surgical colleagues, closer to The Intelligencer home base.

One thing I've learned, which was not taught in either medical school or surgical training, is that a many patients can get through their 'surgical' pain with just NSAID medications like ibuprofen, naprosyn and celecoxib. I am intentionally avoiding brand names to make sure you understand I have no interest in promoting a brand, such as Exparel, which if you read up on their studies, they never compared its effects to other local anesthetics, just saltwater — oh, and is 100 times as expensive as the short-term version.

Unfortunately, my generation of doctors had it drilled in our brains that NSAIDs were dangerous because they caused bleeding and killed kidneys and had to be avoided. Most of my hernia and gallbladder patients use less than five narcotic pills — and I don't give them Percocet, which is about as strong as an oral narcotic you can use.

But then again, orthopedists bring in a lot more money than old-fashioned general surgeons like me, so it's understandable they get more ink.

Don’t vote for candidates funded by the teachers’ union

Funding public schools through the use of a regressive property tax is a bad idea. Even worse are organizations that work against homeowners, actively lobbying against any reform and using taxpayer dollars to do it, like the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA-teachers union).

It’s no secret they spend millions every year to fund campaigns and influence those elected to office to keep the status quo. As our property taxes have been going up every year, what teachers unions spend on lobbying has more than tripled since 2004. They are the largest government union with 181,000 members, according to their website.

There are 3.5 million single-family homes in Pennsylvania and last year a significant majority of people voted for a referendum to eliminate school property taxes. How is it that a union, having a membership that amounts to 5 percent of homeowners, can have so much influence? Because rather than doing what’s right for the people they represent, a narrow majority of the General Assembly choose to do what’s best for their own selfish political ambitions.

Call your state senator and representative and ask them if they represent you or the PSEA. And don't vote for candidates who are funded by the teachers’ union.

Failed to name source

A repeat letter writer once again failed to mention that the source in his recent vent comes from Businessinsider, a German-owned American website that has a far leftist bias view in reporting and has been criticized for click-bating, which means using words that favor liberal causes and exaggerates news events — or as Wikipedia describes it as 'Yellow Journalism' or tabloid journalism — which represent little or no legitimate well research news.

Josh Barro’s comment on May 20, which the writer referred to, was an example of “Yellow Journalism.” Scare headlines, bold print, accusation but no facts to back it up.
